is new video coming in on the bigger box on left side here is video out of omaha, neb. where you can see heavy snow in the area. the storm is being blamed for at least three deaths. on video out kansas city, missouri who is seeing heavy rain. out of the milwaukee wisconsin area they are dealing with snow as well. >> a another thing with this storm is that it usually brings a lot of winds. >> we're also seeing tornadoes that are coming across the south. a lot of people are getting ready to travel for christmas week. we are seeing major delays

>> welcome back it is 7:29 a.m.. we are watching the temperatures. mike pelton is simplesse inte in pleasanton. >> is very cold in pleasanton. is about 30 degrees. it is still below freezing temperatures. here is a shot on your screen showing cars that are frozen solid. the frost is covering the windshields of these cars along first street. a lot of people are still going about their morning. they are all walking their dogs and going for their morning runs. i spoke to one gentleman and he stated that he normally comes out here and walk every morning in shorts. he stated that he had to put on his pants and jackets and gloves.

in this early morning fire. a fire broke got an multiple units on the 100 block of brought the street. we're being told that everyone was able to get out relatively quickly but the fire went to a second area where they were able to put it out quickly. one firefighter was treated for smoke. 28 residents inside of this apartment building have been evacuated and are out on the street. 14 adults, and 14 children are being serviced by the red cross. nobody inside the apartment building was injured given the very early morning of the fire. muni will be shut down for while and is still will remain not running. that will not open this

until they get this goes out. >> and we are monitoring this hearing and in washington. the chairman of the senate foreign relations committed senator john kerry who will most likely be the next secretary of state says that mistakes were made at the state department in the deadly september 11th assault in libya, but congress shares some of the blame. senator john kerry spoke at the start of thursday's hearings. he says an independent pro pulls no punches about the lack of security at the u.s. diplomatic mission in benghazi. but kerrey also faults lawmakers for failing to provide sufficient funds to the state department. for

searching for a third suspect in connection with the kidnapping and assault of a handyman. richard rodriguez jr. is wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment against the victim. the 50 year-old male victim managed to escape his capers at a san jose gas station, leads to the rest of the two other suspects. >> the lome fiscal cliff might affect your tax returns. congress fails to reach a deal by december 31st, as many as 1 million people could see delays in their tax refunds. that's because, the in come exemption levels under the wealth tax or alternative minimum tax were never adjusted for inflation, says it was enacted decades ago.

it just depends on where you are located. when sheland we wie an increase in cloud cover. satellite and radar is keeping most of the wet weather is coming from the gulf of alaska and it will sag south. taking a look at storm tracker 4 we're seeing some light rain right around silver bell right now. because the area is so dry is not actually hitting the ground. wet weather is a possibility later on today possibly around midnight. the rain will intensify north of the golden gate bridge. tomorrow morning could certainly be a messy one. yellow on the screen around 1 01 in moderate to heavy rain. there'll be

that comes beaverboard we have not seen too much snow recently by tahoe has a base of 73 in.. norstar has a base of 65 in. and squaw valley received an inch of snow in the past 24 hours. the base is 10 to 79 in.. >> we continue to monitor pretty good ride for the bay area. later than usual traffic all over. at the bay bridge as we start our bridge check for the westbound ride the 880 approach has hardly any back up at all. even in the extreme right hand lane which goes to the open toll lane. 16 to 80 minutes, 14 are less coming from the nimitz freeway. the san mateo bridge has only emergency vehicles that it was for across the span, thankfully was not problem

on the bridge. we're still looking at a lighter than usual drive here. and this hour we usually with a seen stop and go conditions. drive times are still below 15 minutes. the golden gate bridge ride 1 01 is a little heavy across the span but no delays from the south tower down to the toll plaza. updating drive times east shore freeway is just 23 minutes west word. it's five minutes better than usual. 680 looks better into walnut creek and the san ramon valley. only a 29 minute drive time till the dublin interchange. south bay freeways 85 and 1 01 are white. from marin county the south 1 01 drive times are still under 30 minutes from nevado to the golden gate bridge. >> nasa that has tested a

>> bay area airports and roadways are expected to be less crowded this holiday season because of the actual day of the week the christmas and new year's fall. travel experts say the timing of both the days worked to spread out the crowds. recent years will fall on a tuesday and because of that travelers are leaving friday saturday

weather here and elsewhere. blizzard conditions in the midwest affecting holiday travel this morning. we're keeping an eye on any flight delays and cancellations. the bay area is: another chilly morning. sampras is the land san jose is also temperatures dropped into the twenties as we are waiting for a storm to roll in. mike pelton is watching conditions and pleasanton. >> for the first time we are starting to answer above freezing temperatures in the east bay. it is a very cold morning this morning. you can see eyes and frost on the windshield on the cars that are here along first street overnight. it is not stopping cold weather or stopping anyone from going on a typical thursday morning. a light on a lot of peoplet me pan the camera over

here and try not to give everyone whiplashed but you can see defrost on the grass this morning. it looks and feels like winter out here. i'm sure it is a little warmer in the studio. >> it is mike. i did not want to read that in though. -- run tha andrub >> pleasanton is at 29 degrees. we're working our way out of the '20s and it is 39 and napa. some spots are cooler compared to yesterday. all lot of folks look up and saw frost developing on their windshields. temperatures also will slowly start to

climb as we head into the afternoon. the potential for a stray showers beginning in the north bay. later tonight the weather will spread its way south. i will have full details on what to expect with the looming wet weather coming up in my next report. >> it seems like the closer we get to the holiday is a better traffic gets. there is a fire at plymouth and broad were the traffic is blocked by the san francisco fire department. the tracks are blocked and they have had to substitute bus shuttles for a potion portion of the motion you run. that has accounted for some delays in both directions.

>> jackie sissel is live on the scene at board street with the very latest. this lady doesn't have any shoes! >> they are waiting to get back into their apartments. there is a building that was partially burned out earlier this morning. piquancy the fire truck is still out here on broad street. it is blocking the muni lines and it will probably be in effect for another 45 minutes or so. getting back to the fire, around 530 bay got a call to the apartment building with multiple units. there is a fire in the second floor and the back of one of the units. everyone was able to evacuate without any injuries. this fire he eventually went to two alarm. the firefighters are

able to put out the alarm but what is that is basically they can't just take out one unit. smoke and water damage left a lot of people on the street. 35 residents are out on the street right now. we are not sure of all of them will need assistance from the red cross but those are the numbers that the red cross is giving us right now. they would go through the units to determine what caused this fire. they may be allowed to get some of these people back into their apartments. one firefighter said that minor smoke inhalation was treated. for now though, muni lanes will be closed for the next 45 minutes or so. >> and salmon to help police responded to a homeland found explosive materials they were worried about. police and fire officials
